On Saturday October 8, 2016 I was a member of the team EGGcellent Eats cooking in this year’s EGGtoberfest. I am proud to say we placed 2nd out of 200+ teams and cooked for the more than 5,000 people in attendance. One of our sponsors was Flame Boss™ maker of one of finest (if not the finest) temperature controllers for BBQ enthusiasts on the market. I was lucky enough to get their Flame Boss 200 while in Stone Mountain, GA for this event. After cooking with this device a few times I want to share the results with all of you below.
Unpacking the Flame Boss 200 I found: the main unit, meat probe, pit probe, fan, draft door inserts (for different size Kamado cookers), and the instruction manual.
Setup could not be any easier. The menu and controls on the front panel are easy to figure out without RTFM and I was able to plug and play without issue, allowing me to focus on the cook.
One of my favorite things about the Flame Boss 200 is the fan installation. The insert slid right in the Big Green Egg’s Draft Door allowing me to close the door on top of the insert. This design improvement prevented additional airflow from entering the egg, and it made it easy to install the fan without knocking the insert out like I have experienced with other temp controller fans.
The construction of the pit temperature probe is second to none. The cable is well insulated and built to last. I was happy to see thought put in to this small detail.
Connecting to my home’s WiFi was easy and just took me navigating the menu to enter my SSID and password. From there I was able to pull up the information about my cook on both my phone and from my PC (which I happened to do from work)! I even went for a walk during one of my cooks and was able to manage directly from my phone.

When all is said and done, this is the best addition to my Big Green Egg setup as it lets me focus on my cook instead of tinkering with the temperature, go mobile while cooking, and go to sleep knowing my cook will continue all night and alarm me if anything changes.
